Cities The 21st Century India (Edited By Dr.Satpal Singh)

The challenges of urbanization in India are unprecedented. The greater the growth of the city, the greater appears the scale of its challenges. While large cities are stabilizing the smaller cities and towns are exhibiting strong growth trajectory. The Indian cities are in the state of transformation and the spectrum of transition varies from climate resilient and sustainable at the one end to cities yet to begin the journey to be resilient to climate change. Many urban governments lack a modern planning framework. The city agencies are experiencing inability to cope with the unprecedented demand due to insufficient resources, deteriorating quality of existing urban infrastructure, rising service demand and short fall in investment. The deteriorating urban environment is taking a toll on people’s health and productivity and affecting their quality of life in an adverse way.
