Cities The 21st Century India (Edited By Dr.Satpal Singh)

The challenges of urbanization in India are unprecedented. The greater the growth of the city, the greater appears the scale of its challenges. While large cities are stabilizing the smaller cities and towns are exhibiting strong growth trajectory. The Indian cities are in the state of transformation and the spectrum of transition varies from climate resilient and sustainable at the one end to cities yet to begin the journey to be resilient to climate change. Many urban governments lack a modern planning framework. The city agencies are experiencing inability to cope with the unprecedented demand due to insufficient resources, deteriorating quality of existing urban infrastructure, rising service demand and short fall in investment. The deteriorating urban environment is taking a toll on people’s health and productivity and affecting their quality of life in an adverse way.

In the above context, there is a strong need of understanding the impact of such changes on the living standard of people in the country. With this relevant objective, the present volume is an endeavour to discuss the above mentioned issues in details.

CITIES- the 21st Century India is an outcome of assembling of 23 papers on urban governance and its related issues. The chapters in this book are outcome due to their contribution by leading urban experts from various areas of specialization. This comprehensive volume has six sections that will allow the reader to navigate to their interested chapter. The volume through a series of thematic sections presents knowledge, policy and practice based preparedness from renowned experts of the urban field. The book is aimed at policy makers, academics, scholars, practitioners and all those genuine readers who want to unravel the phenomenon of urbanization that India is persistently witnessing today. |
