The present study is not a detached treatise either on socialism or on power. Rather it is an attempt by an activist to re-assess the ideas which have shaped the socialist movement so far. There had been serious studies of state power and bureaucracy. All these could shed some light on the hazards
of oligarchic tendencies inherent in organizations themselves irrespective of their avowed goals. That led inevitably to an attempt to understand the functioning of the human mind and its implication for the power-centric tendencies in organizations. Since these deal with human traits, they are as valid today a before. A large part of the book had been taken up by that study.
The conclusion of the book was that non-violent change in society alone could obviate the danger of centralized authoritarian power.
