The Book follows mundane bank employee Katagiri, who is visited by a giant, talking frog (Frog) tasked with stopping a massive earthquake threatening Tokyo, caused by a subterranean Worm; they descend underground to battle the beast, and though Katagiri is shot and Frog seemingly perishes, the earthquake never happens, leaving Katagiri transformed with newfound purpose, exploring themes of responsibility, courage, and surreal heroism in post-Kobe earthquake Japan.
