This is the fifth volume in the Chronicles series of non-fiction translations from Indian languages: a powerful and moving account of how women actors were persecuted and marginalized for many decades in Kerala theatre, and yet managed to get nationwide recognition and critical acclaim for their work. Women weren’t allowed to work as actors in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, and those who chose to take this path had to put up with social ostracization and often physical abuse. Over time, this struggle led to the emergence of a new wave of Malayalam theatre. A landmark feminist history of theatre in Kerala that received great acclaim when it was first published in Malayalam.
