എന്നാൽ, രാത്രി ഏറെ ചെല്ലുന്നതുവരെ അവർ കാത്തിരുന്നിട്ടും രാജാവ് വിരുന്നിനെത്തിയില്ല. വിളക്കുകളണയാൻ തുടങ്ങി. വിഭവങ്ങൾ തണുത്തുമരവിച്ചു. ദാസിമാരും തിരുനങ്കകളും ഗായികമാരും അങ്ങിങ്ങു ചാഞ്ഞു കിടന്ന് മയങ്ങി.
എസ്തേർ മാത്രം അവളുടെ ഇരിപ്പിടത്തിൽ നിന്നും ഇളകിയില്ല. വിരുന്നുശാല ഒരു നിശ്ചലദൃശ്യംപോലെ കാണപ്പെട്ടു. ഒരു ചെറിയ കാറ്റുപോലും കടന്നുവരികയോ ജാലകമറകളെ ഇളക്കുകയോ ചെയ്തില്ല. ക്രമേണ അവസാനത്തെ വിളക്കും എണ്ണവറ്റിയണയുകയും വിരുന്നുശാല അന്ധകാരപൂർണമാവുകയും ചെയ്തു.
എല്ലാ ശബ്ദങ്ങളും നിലച്ചു.
