1931ലാണ് ജനിച്ച റൊമില ഥാപ്പര്‍ കോര്‍ണല്‍ യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റി, യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റി ഓഫ് പെന്‍സില്‍വാനിയ,കോളേജ് ഡി ഫ്രാന്‍സ് തുടങ്ങി വിവിധ യൂണിവേഴ്‌സിറ്റികളില്‍ വിസിറ്റിംഗ് പ്രൊഫസറായി സേവനംനുഷ്ടിച്ചിട്ടുണ്ട്. 2004 ല്‍ ലൈബ്രറി ഓഫ് കോണ്‍ഗ്രസ്സ് ഇവരെ ക്ലൂഗ് ചെയറിന്റെ കണ്ട്രീസ് ആന്‍ഡ് കള്‍ചേഴ്‌സ് ഓഫ് സൗത്തിന്റെ അധ്യക്ഷ്യയായി നിയമിച്ചു. ഒരു സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ പുരസ്‌കാരവും സ്വീകരിക്കില്ല എന്ന തീരുമാനമാനത്തില്‍ ഉറച്ചുനിന്ന ഥാപ്പര്‍ 1992 ല്‍ പത്മശ്രീ പുരസ്‌കാരവും 2005 ല്‍ പത്മഭൂഷണ്‍ പുരസ്‌കാരവും നിരാകരിച്ചു. 2008 ല്‍ മനുഷ്യരാശിയെ കുറിച്ചുള്ള പഠനത്തിന് പ്രസിദ്ധമായ ക്ലൂഗ് പ്രൈസ് (പത്തുലക്ഷം അമേരിക്കന്‍ ഡോളര്‍) ലഭിച്ചു.
