തിരുവനന്തപുരം പത്മനാഭസ്വാമിക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ മുറജപം കഴിഞ്ഞ് മടങ്ങുന്ന വടക്കൻ തിരുവിതാംകൂർ, കൊച്ചി, മലബാർ, മദിരാശി പ്രവിശ്യകളിൽനിന്നെത്തിയ യാത്രക്കാരും അവരുടേതായ കുറച്ചധികം ലഗേജുകളുമായി 1924 ജനുവരി 16-ന് രാത്രി 10.30 മണിക്ക് റെഡീമർ ബോട്ട് നിറയെ ആലപ്പുഴയ്ക്ക് തിരിച്ചു. യാത്രികരിൽ മഹാകവി കുമാരനാശാനുമുണ്ടായിരുന്നു. അനുവദനീയമായതിൽ കൂടുതൽ യാത്രക്കാർ കയറിയതിനാൽ എല്ലാവരും ബുദ്ധിമുട്ടനുഭവിച്ചുതന്നെയാണ് യാത്ര തുടർന്നത്. പാതിരാവായിട്ടും പലർക്കും ഉറങ്ങാൻപോലും കഴിഞ്ഞിരുന്നില്ല. ബോട്ട് മാസ്റ്ററുടെ ശ്രദ്ധയിലേക്കു തങ്ങളുടെ അവസ്ഥ അറിയിക്കുകയും പ്രതിഷേധിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തിട്ടും ഫലമൊന്നും ഉണ്ടായില്ല. പലരോടും അക്ഷമനായി ബോട്ട് മാസ്റ്റർ അറുമുഖൻപിള്ള തട്ടിക്കയറിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. എന്നാൽ കുഴപ്പമൊന്നും കൂടാതെ അഷ്ടമുടിക്കായൽ പിന്നിട്ടതോടെയാണ് പലരുടെയും ആശങ്കകൾ മാറിയത്. ആ യാത്ര അവസാനിച്ചത് കേരള ചരിത്രത്തിലെ മഹാദുരന്തത്തിലേക്കാണ്. കുമാരനാശാനെ നമുക്ക് നഷ്ടമായ ബോട്ടപകടത്തിന്റെയും ജലഗതാഗതത്തിന്റെയും അറിയപ്പെടാത്ത ചരിത്രത്തെ രേഖകളിൽനിന്നും കണ്ടെടുക്കയാണ് ഈ പുസ്തകം. |
