സ്കൂൾ യൂണിഫോമിനും പൊസ്തകത്തിനുമുള്ള പൈസ കിട്ടുമെന്നോർത്ത് ഞാനിരുന്നു. പോകാൻനേരം മൂന്നു ലാർജെങ്കിലും വെള്ളം തൊടാതെ വിഴുങ്ങുന്ന കിനാവിലാവണം, ചിറ്റപ്പന്റെ കൊമ്പൻമീശ തുള്ളിക്കൊണ്ടിരുന്നു. പരിപാടി പെട്ടെന്നു തീരാൻ ഞങ്ങളങ്ങനെ നേർച്ചനോറ്റു കാത്തിരിക്കുമ്പോഴാണ് തൊട്ടുമുന്നിൽ ഫ്രോക്കുടുത്ത് വെളുത്ത തുടകാണിച്ചിരുന്നവൾക്കു സംശയം. മുണ്ടുടുക്കുന്നവരെങ്ങനെയാ അങ്കിളേ ആംഗ്ലോ – ഇന്ത്യൻസ് ആവുന്നത്? പെണ്ണിന്റെ കിളിയൊച്ച കേട്ടവരെല്ലാം ഉച്ചത്തിൽ ചിരിച്ചു. ഞാൻ ചുറ്റിനും നോക്കി. മുണ്ടുടുത്തവരായി ഞാനും ചിറ്റപ്പനും മാത്രം. മൂടുപിിഞ്ഞിയ മുണ്ടുപോലെ എന്റെമുഖം വിളറിപ്പോയി. ഞാനെഴുന്നേറ്റു ചിറ്റപ്പന്റെ കൈക്കുപിടിച്ചു.ആംഗ്ലോ – ഇന്ത്യൻ ജീവിതത്തിന്റെ സാംസ്കാരിക പശ്ചാത്തലം തനിമയോടെ വരച്ചുകാട്ടുന്ന ഒർമക്കുറിപ്പികൾ. |
