500 _a “Internal A Psychological Approach”is a study on understanding the dynamics of ‘Threat Vectors’ which createinternal security situations and conflicts that potentially threaten the national fabric. Despite being engaged in dealing with internal threats, one issue that remains unanswered is – “why after decades of political, military and diplomatic efforts and analysis of the issues involved, we arestill not able to reach at a resolution of mostconflict situations – or at least commence the process of conflict resolution and why newer and newer threats emerge?” Analysis and arguments presented in the book suggest that so far India seems to have notfully succeeded in finding a cogent strategy to deal with such kind of situations. The book highlights shortcomings in the present political and policing structure and brings out that there are no concrete efforts in understanding the genesis and fountainhead of any Threat Vector. Analysingthe evolution of a threat vector, the book establishes that this is essentially a complex manifestation that has deep psychological drivers. To this are added other multiple social, economic, ethnic and religious elements. The basis of any threat vector is the mind and not the visible manifestation of violence or the icons of the vector. Effective dealing with a vector thus, in the first place, requires an understanding of why the vector has originated and how it is gaining its momentum. The book focuses on the psychological domain of internal security situations and suggests reorganisation and reorientation of structures at the apex level and elaborates on a model for integrating Psychological Intervention operations as part of the overall strategy to deal with any threat vector. The book thus lays out a theoretical conceptual construct and a functional structure for effective dealing with internal security situations – challenges that India continues to face. The book is useful for policy makers in evolving a new strategic paradigm and reorientation of structures to deal with challenges posed by present and evolving threat vectors as well as for those dealing with these challenges on the ground at the operational level.
